The Hurricanes turned out on Thanksgiving morning to support the Westhampton Beach VFW Post. Post 5350 hosted a "Turkey Trot". Funds raised from the event go towards multiple charitable activities sponsored by the VFW each year. Approximately 35 members of the wrestling family turned out for the event and enjoyed each others company as well as the nice weather! Go Canes! The 2017-18 Hurricane Wrestling family met last Sunday evening (11/12) in the WHB High School cafeteria to kick off the new season. Parents and wrestlers met for sit down chicken dinner provided by one of our favorite places in Westhampton Beach, The Hurricane Deli. Owner Joe Grady and his team always go out of their way to support the team, coming in at ridiculous hours to make sure the team gets breakfast before tournaments and dual meets. The Canes are grateful for that support.
Before and after the meal, there was much to accomplish. Uniform and clothing orders were addressed. Coach Bass introduced his staff and discussed coaching philosophy. The availability of various volunteer positions for parents was discussed as well as an introduction of current volunteers and their duties. It is a great deal of important information that needs to be discussed as well as the first opportunity for some of the team parents to meet. It was a great family event and the right way to start the season. The wrestlers kicked off their 2017-18 season with their first practice the next day. Go Canes! 10/30/2017 7 Hurricane wrestlers accompanied Coach Bass and Coach Mitchell to Hofstra University yesterday to participate in a wrestling clinic (see flyer below). This was no ordinary clinic. In addition to members of the Hofstra wrestling team, also on hand was Ohio State Head Wrestling Coach Tom Ryan, 2-time National Coach of the Year, and Kyle Snyder. Kyle is a senior at Ohio State University, a 2-time NCAA Champion, World Freestyle Champion, and an Olympic Champion. At age 21, Kyle is the youngest wrestler to become a World Champion in US history. He is also the youngest wrestler to ever win the NCAA, World, and Olympic Championships in the same year. It was a very special day for all who attended and some inspirational words that Kyle wrote on a team poster will be framed and put up in the wrestling room. NCAA, World, & Olympic wrestling champion Kyle Snyder sharing some word of inspiration with the Hurricanes that will be later framed and immortalized in the WHB wrestling room.
7/29/2017 The Canes made their annual pilgrimage to Kutztown University to attend the TNT camp held there. It's really the first team building opportunity for the members of the 2017-18 squad and a great opportunity to get some quality mat time. The Canes broke up into three smaller teams for the camp (Pictured below). The team will be hitting the weightroom and getting ready for the upcoming season that will kick off with the annual parents meeting and dinner in November. Go Hurricanes! The Canes concluded their annual home camp on Thursday (7/20). Over 30 wrestlers were in attendance ranging from 6th-12th grade. There were 8 Hurricane wrestling alumni on hand to teach and help the Coaches out. The last two days of the camp, Anthony Bonaventura, the current Assistant Coach at Stevens University (Hobokern, NJ), ran the camp. Mr. Bonaventura is a former Division III national runner-up! A great opportunity to learn from a very impressive group of coaches and alumni wrestlers. After a quick weekend off, the Hurricanes headed to Kutztown University in Pennsylvania for the annual team TNT Summer Camp! 5/29/2017
The Hurricane Wrestling Team recently donated $1,500 to the Live your Cor Foundation. Hurricane Wrestling has now raised approximately $4,000 over the past 3 years for the foundation named in honor of fallen teammate Cory Hubbard. Two of Cory's teammates and now assistant coaches, Ethan Mitchell (left) and Pete DeTore (right) are shown above presenting the donation to Ralph and Holly Hubbard who founded and run the foundation (http://www.liveyourcor.com). The funds are raised through donations made through the annual "Pin Pot" fundraiser. Donors pledge an amount for every pin the Hurricanes get during the season. The donations are split between the Live your Cor Foundation and the Hurricane Mat Club. A very heartfelt thank you to all of this years donors! Last evening (4/19/2017), three Hurricanes were honored by the Suffolk County Coaches Association. Senior Scott Rementer and Sophomore Liam McIntyre we both honored for their all-county finishes. In addition, Seniors Scott Rementer and Dan Purkis were both honored as scholar athletes and awarded scholarships. Dan Purkis will be attending Clemson University, and Scott Rementer will be attending Worchester Polytechnic Instutute this fall. Congratulations to all three!
Summer. Universally loved by students as a time to relax, and enjoy the beaches during the two plus months of time away from school. Some students have summer jobs, families go on vacation, and athletes do some off season training. For the Hurricane Wrestling team, Summer means that wrestling season is right around the corner (just ask Coach Bass) and presents an opportunity to separate themselves from their opponents by improving their skills and getting stronger. The wrestlers, have lifted weights and drilled 3+ times per week. They have attended a week long camp at the High School, staffed by Hurricane coaches and guest college coaches. They attended TNT camp in Kutztown University in Pennsylvania, where they experienced excellent competition. Every wrestler had the opportunity to sit one-on-one with the coaches to develop a specific plan to help them improve even further. That's a pretty aggressive summer, right? For incoming Freshman Gage Rubio, it wasn't quite enough. He decided to take on the ultimate test in wrestling, to attend J-Rob. If you wish to truly test your mettle as a wrestler (ask any wrestler and they will know), J-Rob is the place you go. It is the #1 intensive wrestling camp in the country. At J-Rob, not only are your wrestling skills tested and improved, but your mental toughness is also put to the test. Offering two-week and month long camps. (jrobinsoncamps.com/), J-Rob is owned and operated by Mr. J Robinson. Mr. Robinson is a National Wrestling Hall of Fame member, a former Coach of the Minnesota Gophers, 3-time national champion, and 3-time National Coach of the Year. Mr. Robinson is a former Olympian, Army Airborne Ranger and Vietnam veteran, and knows a thing or two about developing wrestling skills and mental toughness. (J Robinson Bio). Gage Rubio attended the 28 day camp in Iowa last month (July) and returned home recently after successfully completing the challenge! Pictured below with J Robinson at camp graduation, Chase will be a Freshman on the Hurricane wrestling team this season. His Coaches, Parents, and Teammates would like to congratulate Gage for completing this difficult challenge! Go Canes!
The Westhampton Beach Hurricane wrestling team arrived at Kutztown University on 7-18-2016 for their annual team TNT Summer wrestling camp. The Canes have been attending the same camp for around 30 years because of the quality of the instruction and competition found there. The team brought over 25 wrestlers to camp this year and divided the High School wrestlers into two teams this year in order to get a maximum number of matches. Both teams finished .500 or better in their dual meets at camp against some very good competition. Each wrestler had a one on one meeting with the coaching staff after camp in order to discus their experience and to identify 3-5 things to focus on to improve their wrestling skills. Only 17 weeks until the start of the 2016-17 season!
The Wrestling team raised approximately $2,600 from this years Pin Pot and made donations to the Hurricane Mat Club and the Live your Cor Foundation. In the picture below, Assistant Coaches (from left to right) Pete Detore and Ethan Mitchell are shown presenting checks to Ralph and Holly Hubbard who run the Live Your Cor Foundation. The Pin Pot was started during the 2014-15 season as a fundraiser to benefit two causes. The Hurricane Mat club which supports the wrestling team, and Live Your Cor that "pays it forward" by providing financial assistance to families that have suffered adversity or personal hardship. The Live Your Cor Foundation was founded in memory of former Hurricane wrestler Cory Hubbard who was killed by a drunk driver in 2014 while crossing the street in College Park, MD. Cory was an dedicated athlete, teammate and a two-time wrestling team Captain. Coach Mitchell and Coach Detore were both teammates of Cory. The Pin Pot is the sole wrestling fundraiser, accepting pledge amounts per pin that the Hurricanes achieve during the season in all Varsity matches. Donors make pledges via the Pin Pot tab on the website. It's a great way to support support two great causes! The Hurricanes plan to continue the Pin Pot during the upcoming season.
